Collaborative Environments

Formal learning spaces are organized throughout the project in conjunction with both research and teaching environments. These include a large 450-seat symposium center with a sophisticated multimedia audiovisual system. Its design promotes long-duration conferences with aisles and seating that allow participants to move freely within the room without disrupting ongoing proceedings. A number of smaller-scale conference rooms seating 12–30 people are located throughout the building to promote both scheduled and drop-in meetings and discussions. Each room is equipped with audiovisual and teleconferencing capabilities. The north atrium and café serve as the social hub of this scientific community as well as providing breakout space for the symposium center's poster sessions and receptions (see Figures 6.2 and 6.3). Relaxed seating areas with mobile marker boards on every floor encourage informal shoptalk and brainstorming.
